Werners Creek bridge replacement project under way in Alger County August 24, 2020

Work has begun to replace a bridge over Werners Creek in the southwest corner of Alger County, forcing temporary closure of a section of the Deadhorse Road.

“Replacing this bridge will allow for continued public access for recreation, as well as sustainable management of the state forest land,” said Pete Glover, of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Forest Resources Division, which is funding the project.

The bridge is situated in Limestone Township, southwest of Trenary and Diffin, with the Deadhorse Road providing access to Delta County. Until the work is completed, the public will not be able to drive through.

“This bridge is used by hunters, especially during the firearm deer hunting season,” said John Pepin, DNR deputy public information officer. “The bridge replacement project is expected to be completed three days before the opening of November deer hunting.”

So far, the contractor working on the project has moved equipment to the site. Road closure signs and barriers have been installed at road entrances. A small section of the bridge has been demolished to allow a concrete footing extension to be formed and poured at the west side of the bridge.
