Young Swimmer Raises Money for Diabetes

Marquette, MI – One of the new swimmers registered for the July 27th Swim Teal Lake for Diabetes event this year is Julie Johnson. A 9th grader at North Star Academy, Julie has lived with type 1 diabetes for 9 years; having type 1 diabetes means Julie has to use insulin everyday to control her blood glucose and to live. Julie did not do anything to cause her diabetes and there is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes.

To raise awareness about diabetes and help fund diabetes projects, Julie was responsible for putting on a penny war challenge at the North Star Academy. Because of her efforts, over $400 was raised to help support her participation in the Swim and help UPDON fund diabetes initiatives.

Please consider being one of Julie’s Swim Teal Lake sponsors as she participates in the Short and Sweet (1/4 mile) swim this year. Donations of any amount are accepted. In addition, the Swim’s major sponsor, the West End Health Foundation will match all swimmer donations up to $20,000. Checks can be made payable to West End Health Foundation and mailed to the U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network at 1025 Commerce Dr. in Marquette. For donations via credit card call Pam Christensen at the Foundation office at (906) 204-7410.

A few of the projects that the Swim will help support are the 3rd annual Type 1 Diabetes Forum (scheduled for November 2), the development of services to make certain that all people living with type 1 diabetes across the U.P. have access to affordable life saving insulin and programs that will help prevent type 2 diabetes.

For more information about the swim or diabetes, contact the U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network (UPDON) at (906) 273-1120 or cambensyk@upcap.org. UPDON, a program partner of UPCAP has been serving the U.P. since 1985.
