Marquette, MI – Janet Mock, transgender activist and author of Redefining Realness, will give a presentation at Northern Michigan University at 7:30 pm on Monday, February 25, in 1100 Jamrich Hall. Her memoir was the first biography written from the perspective of a young trans person and is this year’s selection for the NMU Diversity Common Reader Program.
TIME included Mock on its 2018 list of the 100 Most Influential People. She began her media career at People magazine’s website, where she worked for five years, climbing the ranks from staff writer to staff editor upon her departure in 2012. Mock is the host of the conversation series Never Before and a writer, director and producer for Ryan Murphy’s FX series Pose. She is the founder of #GirlsLikeUS, a social media project that empowers transgender women. Mock’s second book, Surpassing Certainty: What My Twenties Taught Me, was released in 2017 and details the period in her life when she was not openly transgender.
Free copies of Redefining Realness are still available for NMU students in the Multicultural Education and Resource Center. Mock’s appearance is sponsored by MERC, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Platform Personalities, Diversity Common Reader Program and KingChavezParks Initiative.
