Houghton – The WKC Upper Michigan Martial Arts Tournament and Expo will be held on Saturday, May 5 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Houghton Elementary School. Doors Open at 8:45 a.m. with registration. The tournament begins at 9:45 a.m.

Admission is $15 for an initial competitor division and $5 for additional divisions. Spectators will be admitted for $1.
Refreshments will be available for both Spectators and Competitors

Spectators will have a chance to get a firsthand look at martial arts as well as participate in a few self defense seminars targeted at “REAL WORLD” defense.

Competitors also have a chance to compete Nationally and Globally through this event, ultimately ending up as part of TEAM USA in Canada this October.

Marquette – The Marquette Figure Skating Club will present its annual “Melody on Ice” on Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Berry Event Center at NMU.

Over 100 skaters ages 3 to 18, from the Marquette Figure Skating Club and the Lakeview Skating Academy in Negaunee, will take part in “Color Your World.”

Ishpeming – The third annual HOSA Senior Boys Volleyball Tournament, featuring players from Ishpeming, Negaunee and Westwood High Schools will be held on Wednesday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ishpeming High School gym.

Proceeds will benefit both the HOSA club and the U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network. Admission is $2, and donations will be accepted.

Gwinn – Gwinn Little League Registration will be held on Thursday, March 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sawyer Elementary School, Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gwinn Clubhouse, and on Monday, March 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Gwinn High School.

Hermansville – The 74th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament will be held Thursday, March 15 through Sunday, March 25 at the Hermansville Community Center Gym in Hermansville.

There will be competition in Class A, B, C, D, EE, E and Rec Divisions. There will also be two women’s divisions in Class A and B.

Negaunee -The deadline for registering a team for the 48th annual Charter Negaunee Invitational Basketball tournament is Friday, March 9.

Marquette – The Marquette Figure Skating Club will host the annual Ron Carlson Marquette International Open figure skating competition on Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18 at Lakeview Arena.

Skaters from the Midwest and Canada participate in several events including Free Skate, Jumps, Spins, Dance, and Artistic Interpretation. This non-qualifying competition draws upwards of 150 participants each year. A states qualifying highschool team event and a Basic Skills competition are also held this weekend.

This event is free for spectators.

Marquette – The official Opening Ceremonies for the Special Olympics Winter Games will be held on Saturday, January 21 at 9 a.m. at the Superior Dome.

There will be a parade of athletes featuring competitors from across the U.P. displaying their area’s banner. Joining in the parade will be Northern Michigan University athletes from a variety of sports, the NMU ROTC Honor Guard and U.S. Olympic Education Center athletes.

Dr. Les Wong will welcome the athletes. The event is free and the community is encouraged to attend.

After the lighting of the torch, special awards for outstanding coaches and inspirational athletes from each area will be presented.

Marquette – A meet and greet for Northern Michigan University’s new head football coach Chris Ostrowsky will be held on Thursday, December 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Hudson’s Classic Grill and Bar in Marquette.

Appetizers will be served, and there will be a cash bar.
