South Range – A Free Clothing Drive will be held on
Saturday, November 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in South Range.
There will be clothing from infants to adults of all sizes, including winter clothing and coats for all ages.

Munising – The Alger Cancer Support Fund will sponsor a Living With Cancer pool party and social on Saturday, November 7 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Comfort Inn and Shooters Lounge in Munising.
Refreshments will be served. The event will honor families in Alger County who are living with cancer.

Calendar – Benefits/Fundraisers – Benefit Chili Dinner and Dance – Nov. 7

Traunik – A benefit chili dinner and dance for Damien Miron will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 4:30 to 11 p.m. at the Traunik Slovenian Club.
Admission is $5 for the dinner only, $8 for dinner and dance. Included will be door prizes, a silent auction and a raffle.
Damien, infant son of Alexis Pierce and Michael Miron, is a patient at Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, awaiting three heart surgeries. Proceeds will assist his family with related expenses.

K.I. Sawyer – ‘W’alk the Doors Open, a walk to raise money to reopen the “W” at Sawyer, will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at The “W” at Sawyer.
There is a $10 participation fee. Walkers can increase their donation by collecting pledges in support their participation.
Prizes will be awarded for the most money collected and the most laps walked.
Registration will be held at the door or pre-register by calling 346-6076 or email judyanderson@charter.net.
Concessions will be available for drinks and snacks. This is an inexpensive way to get involved and show your support of this great resource in our community. Help to re-open this exceptional facility and keep it an active part of our community long into the future.

Marquette – In conjunction with “Highlights from the Permanent Collection, on view at the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University through December 12, Dr. Mitautoshi Oba will give a lecture about Japanese modern prints on Friday, November 6 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the museum.
Dr. Oba is Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design at NMU as well as special guest curator for the “Highlights” exhibition.
My Brother Nikhil Film Showing Nov.4

Marquette – Documentary filmmaker Dhar Anirban Onir will screen his 2005 film, “My Brother Nikhil,” on Wednesday, November 4 at 5 p.m. in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building at Northern Michigan University.
Following the film Onir will lead a discussion about being a socially engaged filmmaker in Bollywood.
“My Brother Nikhil” is 1989 story of Dominic Souza, who was diagnosed with one of India's first cases of HIV and was arrested and quarantined for his condition.
African American Pioneers Presentation Nov. 4

Marquette – Author Valerie Bradley-Holliday will speak on African-descended pioneers in the Upper Peninsula on Wednesday, November 4 at 7 p.m. in the Shiras Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.
Bradley-Holliday is the author of “Northern Roots,” a history of African American settlers and how they survived by working in lumber, mining, hunting, fishing, education and sports.
Bradley-Holliday will discuss her continuing research, focusing on the positive impact African Americans have made in the Upper Peninsula. She will sign books after the presentation.

Westwood High School Stadium Show Nov. 3

Ishpeming – The Westwood High School Band will present a stadium show on Tuesday, November 3 at 7 p.m. in the Westwood High School gym.
The concert will feature music from the Jackson 5, percussion cadences, as well as the band's favorites from past pep seasons.
A $3 donation will be collected at the door.
Candy Collection Nov. 1

Marquette – Brett Goymerac, DDS, will pay trick-or-treaters $1 per pound for excess Halloween candy. Candy will be collected on Sunday, November 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Washington Dental, 760 W. Washington Street, Marquette.
The candy must be unopened, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Glowing electric toothbrushes will be handed out. All the candy collected will be shipped to U.S. troops deployed overseas.

Trick or Treat Food Drive Nov. 1

Trenary – The Sunday school youth group from First Lutheran Church in Trenary will have a reverse trick-or-treat canned and boxed food drive on Sunday, November 1.
Members will go door to door in the Trenary area collecting non-perishable foods for donation to the Nifty Thrifty food pantry in Eben Junction.
Halloween Dances and Costume Contests Oct. 31

Halloween dances and costume contests for Marquette County middle and high school students will be held Saturday, October 31 in the Baraga Gym at 300 W. Baraga Ave. in Marquette.
The middle school event is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and the high school event is from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Admission is $5 with a costume and $8 without a costume. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Marquette's Room at the Inn charity. Two $50 cash prizes for best costume will be awarded at each event. Door prizes will also be awarded. Jim Thomas – Candidate for Negaunee City Council.
Discussion with Jim Thomas who is the other incumbent candidate running for the Negaunee City Council. He comes to the race with an extensive background in education as well as city politics and wants to maintain his presence on the city council during these difficult economic times. He says his experience makes him the best candidate for the job of council member.
