American Legion Auxiliary volunteers from the 39 units in the Upper Peninsula will distribute the familiar red, handcrafted poppies honoring America's war dead on Thursday, May 17 through Saturday, May 19. Each poppy has been made by veterans at the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette as a supplement to the physical therapy program. The veterans are paid a small amount for each painstakingly made poppy and for some, it is their only source of income. All proceeds collected by the volunteers are contributed to programs for the rehabilitation and welfare programs of needy veterans and their families. The American Legion asks you to wear a poppy and honor every American who has died for the American ideals of freedom, justice and equality. It is a small symbol of a great sacrifice.
