The 2008 Gwinn Area Centennial Committee is sponsoring a Brothers of the Brush Beard Contest, and contestants may start growing their beards January 1. Categories include full beard, kempt; mutton chops; handlebar; Vandyke; full beard, unkempt. Prizes will also be awarded for oldest beard and youngest beard. Judging will take place Thursday evening, July 10 on the bandstand at Peter Nordeen Park. Participants must purchase and wear a Centennial Button and register with Gary Erickson at Gary’s Barber Shop in downtown Gwinn. Centennial Buttons are available at Gary’s Barber Shop, the Gwinn-Sawyer Area Chamber office, Citizens Bank, Superior Iron Range Community Federal Credit Union, Gwinn area branch, Kountry Korner Deli and Gas Station, Lynn’s Korner Kafe, Gwinn Medical Center, Forsyth Township office, Gwinn Senior Center, Gwinn Bait and Tackle Shop; Shear Perfection Beauty Shop and the Up North Lodge.
