Researchers Discover Two Historic Shipwrecks in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

The vessels are thought to be the steamer Choctaw and wooden bulk freighter Ohio, both found in historic shipping lanes off Presque Isle in Lake Huron.

Engineers from the Great Lakes Research Center at Michigan Tech helped NOAA archeologists from the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary find the two new sites using one of our Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). Using an IVER3 AUV with the advanced EdgeTech 2205 sonar system, the team has been able to provide ultra-high resolution acoustic images of both the Ohio and Choctaw. Check out the full story and (really awesome) images at our Michigan Tech news website. There are even more photos and videos NOAA’s Explorations website.
