Gladstone, MI – With a career spanning four decades, the “Titan of the Telecaster” now calls Red House Records home. Rolling Stone said of Kirchen, “A musical treasure, a fantastic player, and in these roots-conscious times, very much a pioneer. Bill Kirchen is one of our best.” Kirchen’s career started in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the late 60s (graduated same class as Iggy Pop) and later in San Francisco with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airman where they were part of the Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna scene. Kirchen’s trademark Telecaster licks drove their hit “Hot Rod Lincoln” into the Top 10 in 1972 and he is a virtual encyclopedia of rock and roll knowledge, a living guitar legend.
Kirchen’s recent Red House Records release, Transatlanticana, pairs him with British Pub rock originator Austin de Lone. The two have been friends and collaborators for over 40 years and they recorded these tracks in the UK and Texas (hence the title) with a top notch group of Texas and UK musicians. It’s a long overdue release and greasy, soulful fun. De Lone dropped out of Harvard to start Eggs Over Easy, moving to London and recording with Jimi Hendrix’s producer/manager and The Animals’ bass player Chas Chandler in 1970. The Eggs are credited with kickstarting the British pub rock, the first link in the chain to punk rock, new wave and beyond. Since then, Kirchen has worked with Nick Lowe; de Lone with Elvis Costello. When you hear this album, you can tell these guys have been listening to each other play for decades; thematic is masterful and effortless.
