Marquette Climate March April 29

Marquette, MIApril 28, 2017 – The Northern Climate Network is hosting the Marquette Climate March at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Marquette Commons. This is a sister event to the People’s Climate March convening the same day in Washington, D.C. Participants are asked to assemble at 9:45 a.m. to begin the 1.5-mile journey.

The route follows the multi-use path to 7th Street, turning onto Washington Street and returning to the Commons. Those planning to march can RSVP at www.peoplesclimate.org so the action can be counted.

The People’s Climate Movement behind the D.C. event grew out of the largest climate march in U.S. history, held in September 2014 in New York, where marchers demanded bold solutions to climate crisis.

“The march is an opportunity for the Marquette community to join together and raise awareness about the current administration’s commitment to undermine any and all strategies to address this globally catastrophic issue,” said Jes Thompson, NMU communication and performance studies professor. “At the same time, marchers will celebrate the local efforts such as the BLP’s community solar development, the growing local food movement and many of the exciting things the Marquette community is doing to improve our climate resiliency.”

After the march, there will be a community climate festival at the Commons from noon to 2 p.m. with food, music and information on how the community is taking action. To learn more visit the Marquette Climate March page www.facebook.com/MarquetteClimateMarch or the Northern Climate Network at www.nmu.edu/northernclimatenetwork/home.
