Lansing, MI – April 10, 2017 – The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is warning consumers not to purchase or consume I.M. Healthy SoyNut Butter or I.M. Healthy Granola.
On March 10, 2017, the SoyNut Butter Co. of Glenview, IL expanded its recall of SoyNut Butter products to include Dixie Diner’s Club Brand Carb Not Beanit Butter. This product, in addition to all varieties of I.M. Healthy SoyNut Butters and all varieties of I.M. Healthy Granola products, were recalled because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.
Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control has identified 29 people from 12 states infected with the outbreak strain E. coli O157:H7, and nine developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported. No illnesses associated with this product have been identified to date in Michigan.
MDARD is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and neighboring states to coordinate regulatory actions to make sure potentially impacted products are removed from commerce. While MDARD’s food inspectors were conducting recall effectiveness checks, they were finding recalled products still available for sale in some Michigan retail food stores.
Recalled products include:
• I.M. Healthy SoyNut Butter – in 15 oz. plastic jars, individual portion cups, 4 lb. plastic tubs, or 45 lb. pails. SoyNut Butter is available in Original Creamy, Chunky, Honey Creamy, Unsweetened and Chocolate.
• I.M. Healthy Granola – in individual serving packages, 12 oz. bags, 50 oz. bags, and 25 lb. bulk bag. Available in Original, Apple, Blueberry, and Raisin and Cranberry
• Dixie Diner’s Club Brand Carb Not Beanit Butter
E.coli symptoms vary by individual, but often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. If there is fever, it usually is not very high (less than 101˚F/less than 38.5˚C). Most people get better within a week. Some infections are very mild, but others are severe or can cause life-threatening issues such as HUS. People, especially children, who may have consumed these products and are experiencing illness symptoms should immediately contact their healthcare provider. The onset of symptoms is usually within 3-4 days of consumption but may be as short as 1 day or as long as 10 days.
Consumers who have any of these products or any foods made with these products should throw them away immediately or contact the firm where they were purchased for further information. Because of the long shelf life of these products (1-2 years), consumers who may have purchased these products in the past should check their cupboards for these recalled products.
