Marquette/Ishpeming – On Barnes-Hecker Remembrance Day, a day set aside to remember the Barnes- Hecker Mine disaster on November 3, 1926, churches will chime their bells starting at 11:20 a.m. the time the disaster began, and there will be 51 chimes, one for each man lost.
A Community Ecumenical Memorial Service will be held Thursday, November 3 at 7 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, on the corner of Ridge and Third Streets in Ishpeming. All are welcome to attend this service. The names of the 51 men will be read, and members of five of the families of the men lost in the tragedy will have active roles in the service. Refreshments will follow.
