Marquette, Michigan – October 13, 2016 – The Transition Marquette County Reading Group will discuss the book “The Collapse of Western Civilization – a view from the future” by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway, on Thursday, October 13, at 7pm in the Conference Room at Peter White Public Library in Marquette.
The short book is an imaginative, “science-based fiction” look back from the year 2393. Climate change, soaring temperatures, rising sea levels, drought, and finally the disintegration of the West Antarctica Ice Sheet have led to mass migration and reshuffling of the global order. Writing from the Second People’s Republic of China, a
senior scholar looks at how and why the children of the Enlightenment – the political and economic elites of the so-called advanced industrial societies – failed to act and so brought about the collapse of Western civilization.
Naomi Oreskes is Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University. Erik Conway is Historian of Technology and Science at California Institute of Technology. From their unique perspective, they consider not just what is happening, by why we let it. Elizabeth Kolbert, author of “The Sixth Extinction” and “Field Notes from a Catastrophe” writes “The Collapse of
Western Civilization” offers a glimpse into a future that, with farsighted leadership, might still be avoided.”
Anyone is welcome to share in the conversation. It would help to have at least started to read the book. For more information call Charlie at 226-3314 or email mqtchaz@gmail.com
