Michigan Launches HIV Consultation Program

LANSING, MICHIGAN – October 6th, 2016 – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Henry Ford Health Systems (HFHS) are pleased to announce the launch of the new Michigan HIV Consultation Program to address questions from health care providers about HIV-related issues.

“As HIV becomes increasingly managed as a chronic disease it is important to build capacity with partners across nursing, primary care and federally qualified health centers,” said Nick Lyon, director of MDHHS. “Ensuring Michigan providers have easy access to information about how to help patients with HIV is vital to treatment and achieving long term health goals.”

Today, Michigan is home to an estimated 18,000 people living with HIV, including residents of each county in the state. While there have been important advances in HIV treatment that allow people to live longer with HIV, and medicine that prevents transmission, the Michigan HIV Consultation Program will help further this progress by providing health professionals additional resources to best care for their patients.

“While there are highly effective treatments and preventive measures for HIV infection, the landscape of the field is rapidly changing,” said HFHS Infectious Disease Physician, Dr. Norman Markowitz, M.D. “This program will provide up-to-date resources to assist Michigan Health Care Professionals to better care for those with HIV and better prevent transmission to those at risk. ”

The Michigan HIV Consultation Program is set up to answer questions from Michigan health care professionals regarding:

HIV Disease Management
HIV Drug Interactions
HIV Occupational and Non-Occupational Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP/nPEP)
HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
Perinatal HIV treatment

As of October 1, 2016 Michigan healthcare providers are able to receive prompt responses to their HIV care questions from the experts at the Henry Ford Health System Infectious Disease Division.

Non-urgent questions can be submitted at www.henryford.org/HIVconsult, and will be responded to in 24 to 48 hours.  For urgent questions, health care professionals should contact the 24-hour consultation line by calling 313-575-0332.
