Negaunee – The Marquette Regional History Center will host the Teal Lake History Hike on Tuesday, August 30 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Lakeview School parking lot in Negaunee.
Join archaeologist, historian and author Jim Paquette on a visit to the camp sites of Negaunee’s very first miners, the ancient people who once quarried the local Ajibik quartzite deposits on the northeast end of the lake thousands of years ago. Explore the early history and prehistory of the Marquette Iron Range. Learn about the geology, the archaeology, and the history of the lake and the surrounding area and follow the timeworn footpath along the north lake shore to the very sites where the region’s first families once lived.
The hike will then lead to Negaunee’s decades old “infamous” swimming hole–Old Swede–and wander up to the top of the nearby bluffs for an amazing view. Wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather and bugs for this 2 hour hike. The terrain is uneven and there are hills.
Tickets are $10 and available at the Marquette Regional History Center. Only 50 tickets are available for the evening. For more information, visit marquettehistory.org or call 226-3571.
