Building Hope Workshop: Personal Writing, Community & Citizenship February 20th

(Marquette, MI) – The Building Hope in Uncertain Times series presents the writing workshop “Personal Writing, Community, and Citizenship ” led by Jill Darling, PhD on Saturday, February 20 from 12:00-4:00pm in the Peter White Public Library’s Shiras room. Workshop participants will discuss connections between personal experience, writing, and social engagement using the essays in Section 6: The Global Stage of The Impossible Will Take a Little While. Crafting short pieces of creative personal nonfiction will be followed by discussion on how to turn personal experiences and interests into strong and evocative pieces of writing. The workshop will also consider possibilities for writing as social action in the world. Participants need not have prior experience with creative or essay writing but simply be willing to share and learn. Ideas and examples from previous sections of The Impossible Will Take a Little While will be welcome in the discussions.

Workshop leader, Jill Darling has authored poetry collections, collaborative chapbooks and had poems, essays and short fiction published in numerous journals. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Colorado State, a Ph.D. in Twentieth Century American Literature and Culture Studies from Wayne State. She has been teaching creative and academic writing, and literature classes, for over 15 years at universities including Eastern Michigan and University of Michigan-Dearborn. More information and links to her work online can be found at http://jilldarling.com.

To register for the workshop call Margaret Boyle, PWPL Programming Coordinator at 906-226-4318 or email mboyle@pwpl.info. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

There is no admission charge to attend the workshop thanks to sponsorship by the Marquette County Community Foundation, PWPL Friends and Carroll Paul Memorial Trust Fund of the Peter White Public Library, and the Emerick Family Fund of the Marquette County Community Foundation.

The Building Hope program series is based Paul Rogat Loeb’s inspiring collection of essays The Impossible Will Take a Little While: Perseverance and Hope in Troubled Times. The nine month series offers a variety of events to encourage and work toward positive change within our community.
