Marquette – The Building Hope in Uncertain Times series will offer a concert with the NMU Faculty and Friends Jazz Combo called “The Sound of Freedom: Jazz, Race, and Civil Rights” on Monday, December 14 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.
Dr. Mark Flaherty, Professor of Music at NMU, will examine the relationship between jazz and race and focus on specific repertoire and recordings with direct links to the Civil Rights Movement. This presentation will feature classic repertoire recorded by artists such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Max Roach, John Coltrane, and Charles Mingus.
