NMU Student Commencement Speaker, Soloist Announced – Dec. 1

Marquette, Michigan December 1, 2015 – Trevor Case of Chatham, Mich. will be the student speaker at Northern Michigan University’s mid-year commencement on Saturday, Dec. 12. He will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship and a double minor in anthropology and alternative energies.

Case began his degree program immediately after high school, but took a break to join the U.S. Army. He then returned to NMU and has completed his degree in five years. Case says his commencement speech will revolve around the theme of “reflecting on the special people and experiences that influenced our journeys here at Northern and challenging the fellow graduates to be caring and mentoring people to someone else in their next journey. We have a responsibility to go out and show everyone what kind of people graduate from Northern Michigan University.”

In addition to completing his degree program, Case participated in the Anthropology Club and attended a summer anthropology seminar class on Beaver Island. He also has served on the Student Conduct Board and the Code of Conduct Review Panel.

Reflecting on his NMU experience, Case said, “ My studies in business entrepreneurship have given me the skills I need to start my own business and the confidence to do so. My studies in anthropology have given me a more conscientious view of the world. My hands-on studies in the Jacobetti Complex focused on alternative energies gave me the tools that I will need in the ever-changing energy future of our world. The small class sizes and caring faculty made sure that I got the most out of every credit hour I took, no matter the discipline of the class.”

Lauren Larsen of Brighton, Mich., will be the student soloist for commencement. She is graduating with a degree in speech, language and hearing sciences with a double minor in communication studies and music. Larsen will lead the audience in the singing of the national anthem and “Hail Northern.”

The ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome. It will be broadcast live on WNMU-TV regionally and streamed live in high definition online free of charge through the America One/B2 networks. To see the ceremony, follow the link at www.nmu.edu/commencement.
