ABOUT THE ARTIST

As a watercolor artist, Bill Hamilton has received wide recognition for his ability to create beautiful paintings. For him, the most important part of a successful painting is ‘the art of looking’. Hamilton constantly comes across scenes that would be interesting to paint. “A scene might grab my attention simply because it’s striking,” he explained. “I ask myself, ‘how would I paint that?'”

Hamilton has created a series of dazzling new watercolors inspired by the changing seasons from the U.P. and his recent circle tour of Lake Superior, sponsored by Lake Superior Magazine. Much of his admiration for the Great Lakes was deepened by this experience. “I am always reflexively looking at scenes with the potential for a painting” said Hamilton. “Fortunately, these incredible sights are all around us.” Hamilton has produced watercolors inspired by trips to China, Ireland, Scotland, and Italy. Drawing on his experiences abroad has allowed him to broaden his skills when coming back to local subjects like lakes, fall colors, and other natural attractions. Hamilton finds himself constantly returning to U.P. themes, with his preferred subject being nature.

“I love trees, especially because they come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors,” Hamilton said. “I’ve been in the Upper Peninsula so long it has become part of my subconscious. Sometimes I forget that many people do not live in this great environment.”

Hamilton has been painting in watercolors for over thirty years, so it is no surprise that his paintings seem more elegant. When asked what he enjoys the most about watercolor, he replied,”Watercolors are quick and clean; if you get it right, the picture almost paints itself.”

After settling on a prospect for a new watercolor, Hamilton begins to analyze the artistic challenges such as contrast, color and value. “I create the overall composition from the essential elements.”

After working on the larger features, Hamilton then focuses on the little details that reveal the special qualities of space and light. By preserving an overall impression of his chosen subject, he puts in the minute reflections and other fine points that transform his work from a picture to an experience.
