Escanaba, MI-Delta County Airport administration warmly welcomes Shelby Barnes, from Michigan Works! The Job Force Boards’ Jobs for Michigan Graduates Summer Employment Activity, to their office. Barnes, 18, will be interning at the administration office for five weeks this summer.
Attending the Escanaba Virtual Career Center this fall, Barnes’ interests include writing, feminism, and Africana Studies. She hopes to go to school at Bay Community College, and after two years transfer to Ferris State University. Journalism is her major of choice, along with a minor in Public Relations.
The summer activity has given many young people the opportunity of having their first job. With multiple different worksites, students are able to gain experience in the field they desire to work, along with at least 25 hours a week at minimum wage. Michigan Works! Representative Brittany Dubord explains, “Students who participate in this activity learn critical thinking and communication skills, teamwork and problem solving. Skills they can carry with them through their lives and future careers.”
Interns will learn what type of business goes on in an administration office and what skills this entails. “I can’t express enough how lucky I am to have this job,” Barnes says. “To be given the chance to work in an administrative setting and see if it’s a good fit for me is something not every student is able to experience.”
Barnes’ first day was July 13, 2015, and she will be with the airport until the middle of August. Her duties include filing, answering phones and assisting with the marketing aspect of the airport. If you call the office and hear a new voice, chances are you are talking to their newest arrival.
