Summer/Fall Media Internship

Fun, exciting, educational, practical experience defines this unpaid, competitive internship.
Successful candidates experience the full array of broadcasting, music and audio production, programming, web, graphic design, branding, script writing, journalism, photography, media exposure, and on air and online presence – developing skills typically valued by employers.
Great Lakes Radio will provide training and ample opportunities in a wide variety of disciplines focused on real world work situations in modern small radio and media market.
Great Lakes Radio is a local, family owned and operated network of radio stations and modern media outlets, affiliated with FOX, ABC, CBS, and others.
While Great Lakes Radio does not guarantee a position, many of its successful interns secured employment with our company and/or others in the industry.Successful Interns
• Learn skills from every department at Great Lakes Radio
• Demonstrate professionalism
• Work well under pressure
• Follow through meticulously on all assigned, detail-oriented tasks
• Effectively transform ideas and/or directives into quality results
• Communicate effectively via email, online communications, and social networking
• Aren’t shy and apply education, experience, and training to daily challenges
• Demonstrate skills in one or more of the following: photography, writing, audio, sound editing, visual arts, web, graphics, and journalism

Typical Tasks
• On-Air, Board, VT, and front desk shifts
• Writing scripts, proposals, promotional materials, documentation, and business correspondence
• Board operation, audio editing, photo editing, video editing, and other media tasks
• Sports reporting, photography, news reporting, community reporting, research, EEO, and fact-checking
• Posting, distributing, and editing articles and other writing projects
• Contest and event promotions
• Clerical, mail-room, data entry and administrative support
• FCC reports and station affidavits
• Sales support
• Assistant production and quality control
• Policy adherence

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Preferred majors or minors: English, Photography, Computer Art and/or Graphics, Economics, Media Production and Multimedia, Journalism, Media Technologies, Aircraft Repair, or Film Studies. However, we will consider other majors and minors from serious applicants.
• Modern computer skills and the ability to learn new skills and apply them in a real work environment.
• Career-oriented, ethical, and goal driven
• Intelligent and creative with a good work ethic.WRITING REQUIREMENTS:
(Extra Consideration if the title and article demonstrate awareness of SEO, and the writing would get found, get clicked, get read, and inspire response online)
• One sample of applicant’s best writing for a college class;
• One sample (500 words) on any topic of applicant’s choice (transformation of this writing into an audio or video demonstration would be awesome);
• Rewriting this internship proposal as a killer demonstration of an internship proposal using only the information contained herein (picture or comic book is okay, too);
• One sample of any one of the following:
◦ A report from a recent City, Township, County or School Board meeting;
◦ A scientific or technical report for consumption by the general public;
◦ A movie review of a film released no more than 30 days from application; or
◦ Demonstrable proof applicant can write on a typically dull topic without repelling or boring the general public.

Letters of completion may be given to interns who SUCCESSFULLY complete all Great Lakes Radio intern training and demonstrate hands-on, appropriate level of professionalism and application of training.
