MSUE to offer program on Leadership through Effective Meetings

NEGAUNEE, Michigan – Do you remember the worst meeting you ever attended? Was the chairperson lacking basic meeting management skills? Was the crowd unruly? Meetings can either be a complete waste of time or a productive, orderly session with valuable public input, decisions on agenda items, and actions taken on next steps. MSU Extension is offering training for boards, commissions, and clubs on running effective meetings in May in Wakefield, Gladstone, and Sault Ste. Marie. Early registration is required.

Understanding a handful of best practices for running effective meetings can improve meeting productivity and effectiveness. Having a grasp of parliamentary procedure, following board rules and agendas, and respecting member roles can make everyone better leaders. When leaders exhibit such skills and follow the rules the public will too.

This workshop will cover:
* Basics of parliamentary principles and procedure
* Decorum in debate
* Making motions
* Roles of members
* Board rules
* Rules for public comment
* Meeting agendas
* Minutes

The workshop will also include ample opportunity to ask questions and share experiences, plus activities to interact with other participants and apply learning.

This training is intended for local government boards/commissions, private or non-profit boards, and clubs/associations. Discussion will include highlighting the differences between administrative boards such as planning commissions and zoning boards of appeals and other legislative or voluntary boards.

Each program runs 6 – 8:30 p.m. (local time). The workshop is $45 ($40 for Master Citizen Planners). Registration ends May 8th
