2014 MI Income Tax Returns Due April 15th

The Michigan Department of Treasury is reminding taxpayers that 2014 MI-1040 Individual Income Tax Returns are due to the department by Wednesday, April 15, 2015. All forms and instructions taxpayers need to finalize their 2014 tax returns are available on Treasury’s website at www.michigan.gov/incometax.

E-filing income tax returns has become a preferred method of filing for millions of taxpayers, with more than 80-percent of all Michigan income tax returns having been e-filed last year. Taxpayers can access information about free and low-cost e-file, by visiting www.MIfastfile.org. Free e-filing is available based on adjusted gross income, age, or active military status. E-filing is the easiest, most efficient way to file your return and receive your refund.

The Department is also reminding taxpayers to be vigilant about identify theft, as it relates to the filing of potentially fraudulent income tax returns. Treasury is increasing efforts to verify income tax refunds are appropriate. Security measures may require some taxpayers to provide additional information to the Department for verification.

Last year, Treasury intercepted thousands of potentially fraudulent income tax returns, stopping approximately $100 million in potentially fraudulent refunds. If a taxpayer believes they may have been a target of identity theft, they should immediately contact the Department of Treasury at Treasury-ReportIDTheft@michigan.gov and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at 1-800-829-0433.

After filing their MI-1040, taxpayers can check the status of their refund on-line, by clicking the “Check My Income Tax Info” box on www.michigan.gov/incometax. Treasury recommends allowing the department 14 days to receive and enter a paper income tax return, before checking on its status.

The department is also reminding taxpayers to report Use Tax that may be due on purchases made outside of Michigan, either by telephone, catalog, or over the internet, in 2014.

Michigan’s Use Tax applies to transactions on which a retailer does not collect sales tax. Use Tax must be paid on purchases made from out-of-state sellers, including those made while traveling in foreign countries, on the total price of the items (including shipping and handling charges). When an out-of-state vendor does not collect sales tax on a purchase, under Michigan law, the buyer is responsible for reporting and paying the Use Tax.

It is easy for taxpayers to pay Use Tax obligations when filing their MI income tax return by reviewing page 7 of the MI-1040 instruction booklet (Line 23 on the MI 1040 form).
