Marquette Art Week – June 20-27

BUSKERS WANTED

Marquette Art Week, set for June 20-27, 2015 will be a week devoted to lectures, bike tours, nature hikes, public art, demos, concerts, special exhibits, dance and theater performances, readings and films. The city of Marquette Arts and Culture Center is inviting all artist to take their skills to the street during Marquette Art Week. “Busking” is the practice of performing in public places, for gratuities. The city is encouraging artists, musicians, comedians, fire dancers, fortune-tellers, hula-hoopers, dancers, painters, clowns, etc. to sign up to for spots during this week.

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP OFFERED

The city of Marquette Arts and Culture Center will host a sketching and watercolor workshop by internationally recognized filmmaker and artist Suzan Pitt on Friday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This class is limited to 15 registrants and will be held at the art center located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library at 217 N. Front St. The price is $75.

Pitt is an American film animator and painter, whose surreal, psychological animated films and paintings have been acclaimed and exhibited worldwide. She teaches with the Experimental Animation program at California Institute of the Arts. In addition there will be a screening of her film “Joy Street and Asparagus” in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library on Tuesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. followed by a Question and Answer section with the Pitt. This film is for residents 18 and older and is sponsored by the PWPL.

These programs are a series of events in the community that came out of her exhibit “Woodland” that will be hosted at the Marquette Regional History Museum from May 4 to August 29. This Woodland Offshoot program, “Through the Eyes of Suzan Pitt” (June 26 workshop) will begin with a two hour morning draw and photo session on Presque Isle followed by three hours of painting at the MACC.

CALL TO ARTISTS: WOODLAND OFFSHOOT COMMUNITY EXHIBIT

The city of Marquette Arts and Culture Center is accepting entries for a Woodland Offshoot exhibit “The Nature of Art.” This community exhibition is sponsored by the Lake Superior Art Association, the MACC and the Peter White Public Library. Artwork that is inspired by nature will be accepted. This is a non-juried exhibition open to the public, all media is welcomed.

The exhibition will be held at the Peter White Public Library in the Huron Mountain Club Gallery located at 217 N. Front Street, June 1 through July 30, 2015. There will be a reception on Thursday, June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. Artists and public are welcome to attend.

Entry forms and guidelines for the show can be picked up in the SmallWorks Gallery at the MACC. Artwork (with entry forms attached) is due on Wednesday, May 27 or Thursday, May 28 before 5 p.m. and artists will pick up their work in the Huron Mountain Club Gallery on Friday, July 31 between 1 and 5 p.m.

This exhibit is part of a series of programs (The Woodland OffShoot) in the community that derived from the exhibit “Woodland” by internationally recognized filmmaker and artist Suzan Pitt hosted at the Marquette Regional History Museum from May 4 to August 29. Pitt will be in Marquette during the month of June for these programs.
