Human Emotions Talk at NMU November 22nd

Marquette, Mich. — A Northern Michigan University colloquium will focus on human emotions and how those correlate with psychological conditions. It is scheduled at 3:10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in 167 Gries Hall. Joshua Carlson, an NMU psychology professor, will be the speaker. The public is invited free of charge.

The discussion, titled “Feeling it! Neural correlates of emotional experience from anxiety to euphoria,” reflects the results of three magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies dealing with how emotions are represented in the human brain. These studies aim to help psychologists understand the continually changing emotional state of humans and how the dynamic nature of emotions correlates with psychological conditions ranging from anxiety and euphoria to anhedonia and emotional numbing.

Carlson began teaching at NMU in 2013. He completed an undergraduate degree at Iowa State University, received master’s degree from Western Illinois University and earned his doctorate from Southern Illinois University.
