MTEC SmartZone Creates 83 Local Jobs in 2014

Houghton, Mi – January 21, 2015 – In 2014, MTEC SmartZone reached a major milestone, creating 83 local jobs at its affiliated incubator locations. MTEC SmartZone was also recognized by Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) for high performance in every measurable category of success. Categories include: jobs created, companies launched and/or expanded, and the amount of funding brought into the community.

MTEC SmartZone CEO Marilyn Clark was thrilled to make the announcement, adding, “We are proud to be a driving part of the Keweenaw’s economic opportunities. Since 2002, our mission has been to give entrepreneurs and business owners the tools they need to grow and thrive.”

Those tools come from MTEC SmartZone’s SmartStart program, an incubator for young companies that provides business counseling, access to office space, workshops, and a collaborative development process. Since opening its doors in 2002, MTEC SmartZone has created more than 500 jobs by commercializing and growing advanced technologies. It is one of 16 Michigan SmartZones that provides resources to help business owners develop ideas, patents and innovative opportunities. MTEC SmartZone companies, in 2014. generated $19,745,127 in local revenue, up significantly from $4,732,681 reported in 2013. MTEC SmartZone is required to report job counts, among other specific metrics, to the MEDC every year. The number of jobs created each year is based on data collected or reported by MTEC SmartZone clients.

With this achievement, MTEC SmartZone is one step closer to its vision: transforming the Upper Peninsula into a worldclass technology ecosystem. “We have an enormous amount of talent and drive in our community, but innovators need guidance and support,” Clark said. “This milestone shows we’re headed in the right direction. As companies continue to launch, more jobs will follow.” For more information about MTEC SmartZone, please visit www.mtecsz.com.
