Airport Surpasses 10,000 Threshold in August

Escanaba, MI – Delta County Airport has one more reason to celebrate this year as it reaches the 10,000 enplanements threshold required by the Federal Aviation Administration as eligibility criteria for funding. Airports that reach the 10,000 number are eligible for $1 million funding for capital improvements. Airports that don’t reach the required number are only eligible for $150, 000. The great variation in funding makes a big difference for regional airports as they work hard to stay up-to-date with the requirements needed for commercial service.

In recent years, the airport has reached the requirement with months to spare, usually by October. This year, the airport has proven its success by reaching its goal months earlier.

“We can’t really pinpoint the reason for the increase in numbers, but we can take an educated guess, explains Kelly Smith, Delta County Airport Manager. Our morning flight to Detroit provides the best opportunity to reach your destination anywhere in the U.S. by Noon. This allows passengers almost an entire day of vacation instead of losing their first day for traveling. We have also focused our marketing plan, our community partners such as the Commerce center continue to bring national renowned events, as well as our FREE Parking,” she added.

The number of enplanements is generated by the number of people boarding a commercial airplane in Escanaba. This includes supplemental carriers and commercial flights.

“People are using our Airport for both general aviation and commercial service. I believe part of this success is also the team collaborating in our airport. Delta Airlines and its partners excel in customer service; our Transportation Security Association crew is thorough and courteous, and our maintenance crew works hard to provide the best landing conditions,” said Smith.

Delta County Airport is owned by Delta County and serviced by Delta Airlines. It provides two flights to and from Detroit and offers air services for general aviation such as fuel, ground power unit, and hanger rental.

Smith concluded, “Remember, Delta County Airport is the Easy Way to Travel.”
