Free Food for Veterans and Active Military September 3rd

IRON MOUNTAIN – Three non-profit organizations are coming together and donating 30,000 pounds of food to any Veterans or active military members on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The food will include fresh produce, frozen items and non-perishables.

“The Seventh – Day Adventist Food Pantry & Community Center in Escanaba, and the Patriot Guard Riders have all been working in cooperation with Feeding America to make this donation happen as a thank you to Veterans and active military for serving our Country,” said Greg Weiss, the medical center’s Chief of Voluntary Service.

The distribution will be on a first come first serve basis from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or until the food is gone. Those interested should enter through the rear parking lot entrance off of Cedar Street, which is the first street west of the facility; there will be signs directing individuals to the distribution site. It is strongly recommended for those coming to bring a card-board box for the food. Anyone traveling a greater distance should bring a cooler, as frozen food is expected.

“This donation amounts to nearly two semi-truckloads of food, and it is our hope that people in the community and surrounding areas will spread the word to area Veterans and active military,” said Weiss.

Veterans do not need to be enrolled in VA healthcare; however, in order to receive the food, Veterans and active military must bring identification, such as a military or VA ID or form DD214. Anyone with questions about this event should contact Oscar G Johnson VA Medical Center’s Voluntary Service at (906) 774-3300, extension 32780.
