Press Release: Farm Tours from the Marquette Food Co-op

Marquette, MI – The Marquette Food Co-op is hosting the Ninth Annual Farm Tours, an opportunity to visit local farms, meet the farmers and learn about where and how food is grown in the U.P. The tour is part of the Marquette Food Co-op’s ongoing effort to connect people with their food and educate the public about the importance of buying and supporting local farmers and growers. “We go because we enjoy seeing the evolution of the local farms,” says Diane Patrick, local food advocate. “We go every year, even to the same farms so that we can see how they are changing, and to encourage and support the farmers in their endeavors.”

Twelve local farms that supply the Marquette Food Co-op, including established farms that have been practicing sustainable agriculture for more than a decade like Seeds and Spores Family Farm, as well as newer farms like Treasa’s Treasures and Dancing Crane Farm, will offer tours. “We do the farm tours because it’s an opportunity for everyone in the community to see our farm and learn about how a sustainable farm works,” says Shailah Bunce of Rock River Farm. Farm Tours begin on Sunday, June 1st from 1-4 p.m. in the Chatham area with Rock River Farm, Rock River Perennial Garden & Greenhouse, and Reh-Morr Farm. Later tours are on farms in Cornell, L’Anse, Munising, Skandia, Marquette, and Chocolay.

The event is organized so that participants are free to visit the farms at their leisure during the designated hours. Dress for the weather—the tours go forward, like farming, rain or shine! Stop by the Marquette Food Co-op at its new location at 502 W. Washington St. to pick up a Farm Tour Guide with driving directions and detailed information, or visit our website at www.marquettefood.coop
