SNAP Recipients Can Now Get Double Up Food Bucks at the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market

Marquette, Michigan – The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market would like to remind the community that it accepts multiple payment options which include: Project Fresh, Market Fresh, and SNAP Bridge Card. As of June 1, 2014, Double Up Food Bucks will be a complimentary option for those who qualify and use a SNAP Bridge Card.

The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market received a $9,000 grant from the Fair Food Network to be designated for use of Double Up Food Bucks, which provide incentives to encourage healthier choices for SNAP Bridge Card recipients. The program is highly successful and encourages qualifying customers to leverage their federal food assistance benefits to purchase healthy produce, simultaneously increasing the income of the region’s farmers and making a positive impact on the local food economy.

What is Double Up Food Bucks? Double Up Food Bucks are dispersed in the form of metal tokens. When a SNAP recipient shops at the Farmers Market, the amount they spend on their SNAP Bridge Card is matched up to $20 per visit through Double Up Food Bucks. For example, if a customer used their SNAP Bridge Card to withdraw $40 they would receive an additional $20 in Double Up Food Bucks, that is not deducted from the SNAP Bridge Card balance. Double Up Food Bucks do not need to be used on the same day in which they were acquired, but can be used at any time throughout the market season. Double Up Food Bucks must be used to purchase Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, food plants, cut herbs and herb plants.

How are Double Up Food Bucks redeemed? SNAP recipients are able to receive Double Up Food Bucks at the Farmers Market by visiting the cashier at the information booth. In order to participate, customers must have a valid SNAP Bridge Card and use it at the market before they can receive Double Up Food Bucks.

“Customers who use SNAP benefits at the market should plan to get Double Up Food Bucks early to allow for better budgeting towards the end of the month,” explains Market Manager, Myra Zyburt. “We want to welcome and invite anyone who is using a SNAP Bridge Card to come to the Farmer’s Market information booth with any questions they might have about how to receive the Double Up Food Bucks benefit.”

The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market is held on Saturdays through October 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marquette Commons, 112, South Third Street in downtown Marquette.
