MDOT Lifts Traffic Restrictions to Ease Memorial Day Travel

Fast Facts:
– MDOT is suspending as much work as possible from 3 p.m. Friday, May 23, until 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 27.

May, 2014 — This Memorial Day weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing lane restrictions on nearly three-quarters of its road projects to ease traffic delays for holiday travelers. AAA Michigan estimates 1.1 million motorists will be using Michigan roads and bridges during the annual kick-off to summer.

Beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, May 23, and continuing until 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 80 of 108 projects statewide will have lane restrictions removed. While construction zones may be closed for the weekend, motorists are advised that equipment and temporary traffic configurations, like minor shifts, may remain in place, requiring motorists to adjust their speed and pay attention.

“While the Memorial Day weekend is an exciting time to launch the summer travel season, safety is always the top priority,” said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. “Drivers should buckle up, eliminate all distractions, and use caution, especially when traveling through work zones.”

Steudle reminds motorists the statewide mission of getting Toward Zero Deaths. “Our goal is to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Michigan roadways. As Michigan moves Toward Zero Deaths, it is important that we take every opportunity to improve safety on Michigan roadways. Improving driver behavior is a major part of that.”

More information about Toward Zero Deaths can be found at www.michigan.gov/zerodeaths.

MDOT oversees I, M and US routes and is responsible for nearly 10,000 miles of state highways, which carry more than 50 percent of all traffic and approximately 70 percent of commercial traffic in Michigan.

For up-to-date information on MDOT projects, view the list of statewide lane closures at: www.michigan.gov/drive.
