GWINN SCHOOL DISTRICT HONORS DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR
At the April 28, 2014 regular meeting of the Board of Education, Gwinn Area Community Schools, Dr. Stephen L. Piereson, Superintendent, presented Mrs. Amy Laitinen with a plaque honoring her as District “Teacher of the Year”.
The following are quotes from Mrs. Laitinen’s peers and students who nominated her for this honor:
- She is highly respected as a teacher not only in our own district, but also in our Upper Peninsula community of teachers and across the nation with her affiliation with the National Writing Project.
- She encourages her students to find their voices and to find audiences for their words.
- Her enthusiasm for reading and writing is contagious.
- She changed my life forever. She was the teacher who showed me the strength found in words and encouraged me as I found the strength in my own words and myself.
- She carries on the message that no matter what we have been through, our story matters.
Mrs. Laitinen has been employed with the Gwinn Area Community Schools since 2001 and currently teaches English and creative writing at Gwinn High School.
