Global Climate Convergence Launches Earth Day to May Day Wave of Action

Over 150 grassroots events planned in over 50 cities over 10 days to build movement for People, Planet and Peace over Profit.

April 22, Mother Earth Day – The Global Climate Convergence will launch over 150 events in over 50 cities worldwide as part of their “10 Days to Change Course”.

In light of the recent warnings by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that deep cuts to carbon pollution must begin now to prevent a global catastrophe, the Global Climate Convergence is calling on people across the United States and beyond to join in a wave of grassroots action from Earth Day to May Day.

Earth Day (April 22nd) is often considered the birthday of the modern environmental movement, while May Day (May 1st), long celebrated by the labor movement as International Workers’ Day, was reinvigorated in recent years by immigrant rights groups. Linking these days of global significance with a wave of grassroots action and education is symbolic of the growing unity among movements for social, economic and environmental justice.

In January 2014, a diverse coalition of progressive groups met in Chicago, with backgrounds in immigrant and Indigenous rights, environmental and racial justice, labor, peace and anti-poverty activism. Out of this meeting came the Global Climate Convergence, with the mission of building a popular movement for “People, Planet and Peace over Profit!”

In just three months the Global Climate Convergence has taken on a life of its own, blossoming into numerous state chapters, local alliances, and events ranging from marches, rallies and general assemblies to teach-ins, film screenings and public light shows, all planned for the period surrounding Mother Earth Day and May Day 2014.
