Tillotson Paper Presented at National Meeting

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University senior Taylor Tillotson of Marquette had a research paper accepted from more than 12,000 submissions to the American Educational Research Association. The paper was placed in a roundtable session titled “Digital Technology in Social Studies” at the AERA annual meeting in Philadelphia earlier this month.

Tillotson’s work focused on Elect Her, an annual conference at NMU developed to encourage women to run for student government, and applying materials to three Marquette Senior High School advanced placement social studies classes. In those classes, he facilitated campaign simulation training sessions. He used a pre-test and post-test design, as well as quantitative and qualitative research.

The AERA annual meeting, “The Power of Education Research for Innovation in Practice and Policy,” aims to highlight research that is groundbreaking in design, methodology, instrumentation and assessment.

Tillotson is a secondary education major focusing on social studies and a member of the Lundin Scholars Program. His work was also highlighted at NMU’s 19th annual Celebration of Student Research, Creative Works and Academic Service Learning. He serves on the Associated Students of NMU judiciary committee and is a member of the Student Leader Fellowship Program.
