NMU Celebrates Student Research, Creative Works on Thursday

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Northern Michigan University will hold its 19th annual Celebration of Student Works on Thursday, April 10, in rooms 235A and B of the Learning Resources Center. An opening ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m., with student presentations starting at 9:30. Poster presentations will be displayed in the lower level of the LRC for the duration of the event, which runs until 4 p.m.

The celebration showcases the research, creative works and academic service learning projects of 121 NMU undergraduate and graduates students this year. It features 60 posters and 27 student presentations, each lasting about 15 minutes.

Some of the oral presentations with topics of broad interest include:

“Impact of a Diversity Conference on University Curriculum, Recruitment and Accreditation Efforts” by freshmen Christine Wilson and Autumn Palmer, 9:45 a.m.

“Comparison of Kinematics and Accuracy of Overhand American Football Throwing,” which examines elbow angle, wrist velocity and throwing accuracy during American football throws, by graduate student Cale Anderson, 11:15 a.m.

“Lifespan ImPACT Test” by freshman Janice Hamachek and graduate student Benjamin Murphy tests the reliability of the Lifespan ImPACT test as a tool for return-to-play decisions for youth athletes who suffer concussions, 11:30 a.m.

“Out of Place: A Learning Experiment in Environmental Education” by sophomore Melissa Orzechowski looks at environmental education and communication during elementary and middle school and asks if this education works outside of the direct context of the environment, 1:30 p.m.

“The Inadequacy of Funding from Our Federal Government for Our Returning Veterans” by senior Harlee Alexander, 2:15 p.m.

“Effects of Timber Harvest on American Black Bear Space Use” by graduate student Donald Norton, 3 p.m.
