MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – Back by popular demand, join Dr. Mark Flaherty and the NMU “Faculty and Friends” Jazz Combo for an entertaining and educational concert featuring cool jazz music at the Peter White Public Library on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00 pm in the library’s community room.
This presentation will feature classic repertoire recorded by artists such as Miles Davis and Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Dave Brubeck, Shorty Rogers, and others. Dr. Mark Flaherty, Associate Professor of Music at NMU, will explain the origins and characteristics of the “cool” jazz style, and discuss its relationship to “bebop” and other modern jazz styles.
Performers in the band include Mark Flaherty on trumpet, Audra Hagan on alto sax, Steve Leuthold playing tenor saxophone, Betsy Grugin on the baritone sax, Gordon Erickson on trombone, Dave Ziegner playing guitar, Harry South on the bass and Jim Strain playing the drums.
