Final Increase in Energy Funding for Low Income Families in the Upper Peninsula

Marquette, MI – The Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) in cooperation with St. Vincent DePaul offices throughout the Upper Peninsula are pleased to announce that due to severe winter weather and the current home heating crisis there will be additional funding available for qualifying low income families to help cover related energy bills. Funding is provided by the Michigan Public Service Commission through the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP).

The SWP has partnered with St. Vincent DePaul chapters throughout the Upper Peninsula (all 15 counties) to coordinate the heating assistance program. Starting on April 1, 2014 applicants falling below 150% of the federal poverty level can apply through their local St. Vincent DePaul office and receive up to $2000 (formerly $1,000) to assist with heating bills (propane, gas, oil, wood, pellets, etc). All payments are made directly to the energy provider or utility. All applications must be processed through local St. Vincent de Paul offices.

The SWP is also offering participants a FREE Home Energy Check Up to help homeowners identify areas for energy efficiency improvement. People in need of assistance are encouraged to call their local St. Vincent de Paul thrift store or hotline before May 31, 2014 to take advantage of this opportunity.
