The date of the mine Groundwater Discharge Permit (GWDP) public hearing has been scheduled. The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. March 25 at Westwood High School, 300 S. Westwood Dr., in Ishpeming. The MDEQ will begin by answering questions regarding the draft permit, followed by the public hearing.
As previously mentioned, a GWDP must be reapplied for every five years. Since issuance of Eagle’s original GWDP we’ve collected additional groundwater data. Thus, the permit parameters were adjusted to align with the natural conditions of the water reflected in the data. This does not change the quality of Eagle’s treated water. Our water treatment plant has performed exceptionally and continues to treat water to better than drinking water quality standards.
Both the MDEQ and Community Environmental Monitoring Program are pleased with this application. “We’re looking forward to a public meeting where we can answer some questions and let people know how good this permit really is,” said Steve Casey, district supervisor for the DEQ’s Water Resources Division in Marquette in a recent Mining Journal article.
Anyone is welcome to attend the public hearing. Information regarding the proposed permit can be accessed on the MDEQ website.
