Eagle Mine has applied for a new Groundwater Discharge Permit (GWDP) for the mine site. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issues this permit to control the discharge of wastewater to groundwater. For Eagle, this permit regulates the discharge of treated water from our water treatment plant (WTP) to the Treated Water Infiltration System (TWIS).
A GWDP must be reapplied for every five years. Since issuance of Eagle’s original GWDP we’ve collected additional groundwater data. Thus, the permit parameters were adjusted to align with the natural conditions of the water reflected in the data. This does not change the quality of Eagle’s treated water. Our WTP has had exceptional performance and continues to treat water to better than drinking water quality standards.
Despite extensive review of the application and prior discussion with concerned parties, the MDEQ has indicated they will hold a public hearing in March. The details of the hearing have not been announced at this time.
