(Houghton, Michigan) – It’s the first outdoor Alumni-Student Broomball Invitational, and Michigan Tech alumni are eager to get their cup back from the student teams who currently hold it. The four-year old competition is split, with two wins for each side.
It all takes place on the rinks next to the Walker Arts and Humanities Center this Friday and Saturday. Preliminary rounds unfold Friday, Feb. 7, from 3:30 to 8:15 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 8, from 11 a.m., leading up to the championship game, which will be held at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
In broomball, players slide around the ice with no skates, attempting to hit a small blue ball toward the opponents’ goal with duct-taped brooms. It is the biggest sport on campus, with some 240-plus men and women from on and off campus competing all winter long.
The competition is part of Michigan Tech’s famous Winter Carnival. The theme this year is “Nostalgic Films of Childhood Days Come to Life in Frosty Ways.”
Many alumni are returning to campus for the Carnival, including the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, which is meeting on campus this week.
