MARQUETE CITY BAND OFFERS A NEW WINTER CONCERT February 9th

MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – After decades of being a summer only band, the Marquette City Band is expanding their musical season. Under the direction of Dr. Stephen Grugin, they will perform in concert on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Reynolds Recital Hall at the C.B. Hedgecock Building at Northern Michigan University. The concert is free and open to the public.

In 2012, the Band celebrated the 125th anniversary of it’s formation in 1887. Summer concerts have been performed continuously every year since 1929. As a community band of adults and students from throughout the area, the Marquette City Band provides musical enjoyment for the general public, while giving band members opportunity to use their musical talents. Dr. Grugin is Director of Bands and Professor of Low Brass at NMU, and has directed theMCB since 2012.

Under a new master plan, the band is undergirding their operation through new grants, expanding their concert season, offering two smaller brass and woodwind ensembles, and planning for a summer band festival for community band members of the region. They will also be raising the Director’s stipend, as well a purchasing new music, equipment, and marketing.

Concerts are made possible by the generous support of the City of Marquette, the Louis G. Kaufman Endowment Fund, the Ray and Peg Hirvonen Foundation, their patrons, and the contributions of audiences. The MCB has also received two new grants from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Marquette County Community Foundation, making their expanded season possible. The MCB website can be found at www.marquettecityband.com. Anyone wishing further information about the band or instrumentalists wanting to play can contact Dr. Grugin at 227-1040 or MCB President Ben Bohnsack at 250-7019.
