Ishpeming, MI—Jan. 22, 2014 —Cliffs Natural Resources, (NYSE: CLF) (Paris: CLF) announced today that an influential Michigan mining executive has died.
Gilbert A. Dawe, of Ishpeming passed away on January 20, 2014, he was 92 years old.
Dawe, began his career as a staff geologist with Cliffs in 1949. He filled a number of key assignments of increasing responsibility in Michigan and was named General Manager of Mines for the North American Mining Division in 1977.
In his position he had overall management responsibility for all the Michigan mines, which at the time included the Empire, Tilden, Republic and Humboldt open pit operations and plants as well as the Mather “B” underground mine and associated Ore Improvement Plant and Pioneer Pellet Plant. His responsibility also included the company’s Ishpeming Central Shops.
“Mr. Dawe was a key member of Cliffs’ management team during a very critical time as the iron ore industry in Michigan moved from underground mining to open pit mines and processing plants,” said Dale Hemmila, director of public affairs for Cliffs in North America. “His leadership was instrumental in moving the company through this growth process in Michigan and overseeing the closure of the Mather “B”, Humboldt and Republic operations while supervising the expansion of Empire and Tilden.”
Dawe retired from Cliffs in 1984. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming.
