A public reception kicking off the Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys program series features Jon Magnuson, M.Div., M.S.W. presenting the keynote address entitled Religion and the Public Square: Faith Politics, and the First Amendment on Tuesday, January 28
at 7:00pm in the Peter White Public Library’s community room. The talk will examine the historical roots that lie under our often troubled experience of religious tolerance and freedom in the ever-unfolding Great American Experiment.
Magnuson is a former Peace Corps volunteer and parish pastor. As a licensed psychotherapist, and university chaplain, he has taught with Native American Studies and Social Work departments at the University of Washington, Oregon State University and Northern Michigan University. He is an ordained Lutheran clergy (ELCA) and has published
over fifty articles on spirituality, ethics, and the environment. He currently serves as Director for The Cedar Tree Institute, a nonprofit organization in Marquette that provides services and initiates projects in the areas of mental health, religion, and environment.
Peter White Public Library has received a grant through the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association in support of programming surrounding the Bridging Cultures Muslim Journeys Bookshelf- a collection of twenty-five books and three
documentary films, a DVD of short films as well as a one-year subscription to Oxford Islamic Studies Online. The collection will be showcased at the reception and refreshments will be served.
PWPL is one of 125 libraries and state humanities councils across the country selected to participate in the Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys initiative, a scholar-led reading and discussion program designed to foster opportunities for informed community conversations to familiarize public audiences with the people and cultures of
Muslims in this country and around the world.
Events in support of Let’s Talk About It are scheduled from January through May. Programs include classes, book discussions, and film screenings and are held at the library at no admission charge.
