New Exhibits Open at DeVos Art Museum January 13th

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Two new exhibits will open in January at the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University. “Mariel Versluis: Be Here, By Me” showcases two- and three-dimensional works by the Grand Rapids-based artist. It opens Monday, Jan. 13. A reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, and includes a 2:30 p.m. demonstration of skijoring, which Versluis competes in nationally. It is free and open to the public.

The second exhibit is “The End Will Look as the Beginning Did,” pieces from NMU’s permanent art collection that were selected by student interns. It opens Monday, Jan. 20 and is supported by the John X. and June A. Jamrich Endowment for the Arts.

Versluis completed a series of large-scale print collages during a recent sabbatical that reflect on the artist’s relationship with nature, particularly fauna. Horses, swans and dogs have played important roles in her work as symbols for life transitions. The exhibition also includes her assemblage and sculpture piece, “Train of Fools,” and the debut of her new drawing series titled “Pages from a Book.”
