Gordon J. “Gordy” LeDuc

Gordon J. “Gordy” LeDuc is a 1958 graduate of Marquette’s Graveraet High School. While a student, he was a class officer for all four years, a member of the Student Council, and involved in the athletic programs year around. After graduating from Northern Michigan University in 1962, Coach LeDuc spent the next thirty-plus years as an educator, Gordy worked in six different school districts. Coach LeDuc could easily be called “Mr. U.P. Basketball.” Returning to his alma mater – Marquette in 1972, Gordy established the all-time win record of 241, and is the longest tenured basketball coach at MSHS with seventeen years. In retirement, Coach LeDuc continues to give back to his community stating, “I believe in giving back to your community. Being involved, brings great satisfaction and enjoyment.”

Sallie W. “Penny” Chisholm

Sallie W. “Penny” Chisholm is a 1965 graduate of Marquette Senior High School. She credits her love of science to her junior high science teacher Fred Rydholm. After high school, Dr. Chisholm received her B.A. from Skidmore College in 1969, and received her Ph.D. from S.U.N.Y./Albany in 1974. A life-long biologist, she currently serves as a biology professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Chisholm was recognized by President Barack Obama on Feb. 1, 2013, with the National Medal of Science award, the nation’s highest honor in the field of science. Dr. Chisholm’s twenty-five year discovery of, and research on, Prochlorococcus establishes its significance as part of the base of the food web in the oceans. Dr. Chisholm has written children’s books to help young people understand photosynthesis. She continues to be an advocate for not tampering with the oceans eco-system, especially in response to global warming. She welcomes the opportunity to speak to local science classes about her passion.
