Marquette, Michigan — On Monday, September 30, 2013, the City of Marquette and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) will be unveiling the new sign at the entrance of Presque Isle at 5:30 p.m. The sign was illustrated by Ojibwe artist, Sherri Loonsfoot-Aldred, and will be honored with an unveiling ceremony at the sight. The public is encouraged to attend.
This unique partnership with the KBIC ensures a culturally appropriate, authentically representative and artfully symbolic sign for Presque Isle. A group of nine photography students, under the leadership of artist Kristine Granger, documented Loonsfoot-Aldred’s process of creating the sign. The photo essay book will feature the students’ photos, a history of Presque Isle and some Anishinaabe language. To purchase a copy, call the Northern Michigan University Center for Native American Studies at 906-227-1397.
The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center is located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library. For more information or questions, please call (906) 228-0472 or email arts-culture@mqtcty.org.
