40,000 Expected for 56th Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk

(St. Ignace, MI) –– It’s not too late to make the Mackinac Bridge Walk tradition a part of your family’s Labor Day festivities this year, reliving old memories or making new ones.

Gov. Rick Snyder will lead the expected 40,000 walkers across the 5-mile span beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2. Walkers can start across the bridge up to 11 a.m., and buses are available to bring walkers from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace for $5. All details on the walk are available on the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) Web site at www.mackinacbridge.org.

To help ensure the safety of all participants, the Michigan State Police (MSP) will be conducting searches of purses, bags and backpacks for all walkers. Walkers are asked to leave their purses, bags and backpacks in their vehicles, if the contents aren’t essential, to avoid delays.

“We appreciate all participants’ willingness to submit to a search, or to leave their bags in their vehicles,” said Bob Sweeney, MBA executive secretary. “That will help make the walk safe and enjoyable for everyone.”
