BOARD MEETING SUMMARY
AUGUST 19, 2013
Claims in the amount of $505,111 were approved for payment.
The Board heard public comment from the following:
1. Jane Nordeen – commented on the Board’s Public Comment policy/procedure
2. Peggy Noah – asked about the District’s future use of Gilbert Elementary School
Superintendent Piereson updated the Board on various topics including: GEA negotiations, the purchase of two used busses, the Michigan Council for Educator Effectiveness, the upcoming meeting of the Building & Site Committee, the potential to offer dental services through a partnership between the Gwinn Teen Clinic and the upcoming Upper Great Lakes Talent Summit to be held on September 20. Superintendent Piereson also presented the Board with minutes from the recent Building & Site and Athletic Committee meetings.
The Board took action on the following:
Approved changes to the KIS Elementary School student handbook.
Appointed Joe Boogren as the Board’s chose for the MASB Delegate Assembly.
Approved the following appointments for the 2013-14 school year:
1. Equal Employment Opportunity Compliance Officer – Superintendent
2. Civil Rights Compliance Officer – High School Principal
3. Section 503 and 504, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Compliance Officer – Special Programs Administrator
4. ADA, Right to Know, Asbestos Compliance, Blood Borne Pathogens Officer – Supervisor of Operations
5. Liaison for Homeless Children and Youth – Special Programs Administrator
6. Investment Officer – Business Manager
Approved the following bids:
1. Dairy Products – Jilbert’s Dairy
2. Bakery Products – Bimbo Bakeries USA/Sara Lee Fresh Bakery
Approved a resolution to accept “Schools of Choice” applications from residents of contiguous intermediate school districts in accordance with Public Act 297 of 2000.
Approved a list of all classes available for credit and or State Aid.
Approved the layoff of the following personnel:
1. Brian Mishica – history teacher, Gwinn High School, effective date of layoff – September 3, 2013
Accepted the resignation of the following personnel:
1. Michelle Firkell – breakfast/lunch server – KI Sawyer Elementary School, effective date of resignation – August 1, 2013
2. Heather Winkler-Carroll – paraprofessional, KI Sawyer Elementary School, effective date of resignation – August 5, 2013
3. Tammy Arsenault-Horton – District school social worker, effective date of resignation – August 23, 2013
4. Sabina Austin – computer teacher, KI Sawyer Elementary School/GMS, effective date of resignation – end of the 2012-13 contract year
5. Heather Anderson – part-time elementary art teacher, KI Sawyer Elementary School, effective date of resignation – end of the 2012-13 contract year
6. Betty McCall – 5th grade teacher, KI Sawyer Elementary School, effective date of resignation – end of the 2012-13 contract year
7. Lisa Belpedio – 1st grade teacher, KI Sawyer Elementary School, effective date of resignation – end of the 2012-13 contract year
8. Christina King – special education teacher, KI Sawyer Elementary School, effective date of resignation – end of the 2012-13 contract year
9. Mike Nicosia – industrial arts teacher, Gwinn High School, effective date of resignation – end of the 2012-13 contract year

Accepted, with great appreciation, the following gifts/donations:
1. Gwinn All-Sports Booster Club – various donations as follows: Anytime Fitness summer training for 7-12 grade students – $2,490; Advantedge Sports summer training for 7-12 students – $5,145; “Elevate your Game” books for summer training – $919.77; Three (3) wall mirrors for the weight room – $638.98; New “300 pound club” banners for weight room – $597.43; Senior Athletic Plaques – $312; Additional Track Coaches due to high participation – $2,000; Football Sideline Markers – $233.69
Approved an increase in paid hot lunch prices at Gwinn High School to $2.25, to be in compliance with Federal guidelines, beginning with the 2013-14 school year.
The Board then adjourned to Executive Session to discuss negotiations. Upon return from Executive Session, the Board took the following action:
Approved a motion to ratify the 2013-2016 contract with the Gwinn Education Association.
