Governor Orders Flags Lowered Through Thursday, Aug. 8 to Honor Former State Sen. David Plawecki

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags within the state Capitol Complex to be lowered to half-staff today through Thursday, Aug. 8, in honor of former state Sen. David Plawecki, of Dearborn, who died Sunday. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Friday, Aug. 9.

“David Plawecki was a respected and accomplished legislator and public servant who helped make state government more open,” Snyder said. “On behalf of all Michiganders, I extend my most sincere condolences to his family and friends.”

Plawecki served as state senator for the 12th Senate District from 1971-82, and also served as the majority floor leader. He was the youngest state senator elected in Michigan history at the age of 22. He was influential in the adoption of the state’s Open Meetings Act, Bullard-Plawecki Employee Right to Know Act, and Freedom of Information Act. Plawecki later went on to serve as deputy director of the former state Department of Labor and Economic Growth.

A funeral Mass will be Thursday, Aug. 8 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Divine Child, 1055 N. Silvery Lane in Dearborn.

This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2006-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.

When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U. S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
