Escanaba, MI – Tickets are selling fast for the governor’s luncheon during Governor’s Day at the U.P. State Fair Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The luncheon, always a sellout, is a key part of the governor’s visit to the fair. He’s also expected to tour the fairgrounds and enjoy various midway and livestock attractions while visiting with fairgoers.
Those wanting to purchase the $20 luncheon tickets, which include the cost of admission to the fair, should contact the Delta County Commerce Center .
The luncheon, sponsored by Michigan Works the Job Force Board, Daily Press, Upper Peninsula Power Company, Great Lakes Timber Professionals and the U.P. State Fair Authority, will feature a presentation from the governor and various delicacies from chamber-member restaurants.
In past luncheons, the governor has discussed the state budget, health and wellness, the state’s “Pure Michigan” program, the Department of Natural Resources and Department of Environmental.
Past Michigan governors, including Snyder, have congratulated the U.P. for having Michigan ’s only state fair. Several years ago, funding for the state fair in Detroit and the Upper Peninsula State Fair ended. Delta County led the effort to transition the U.P. fair to a regional effort, which is flourishing, according to Commerce Center Executive Director Vickie Micheau. The center contracts with the U.P. State Fair Authority to operate the fair and its facilities.
“A great sign of the significant impact of the fair is the continued participation by Michigan governors. It’s nice to have our region recognized for its hard work and successes. The luncheon is a celebration,” Micheau said.
The governor’s visit coincides with Military Appreciation Day, which is also scheduled for Wednesday. Active military, retired military and veterans will receive discounted admission prices.
The highlight of Military Appreciation Day is bestowing of the U.P. Veteran of the Year Award.
“We all owe so much to veterans, both past and present. This day allows the entire peninsula to thank these heroes for their service and love of country,” Micheau said.
This year’s fair is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 12, through Sunday, Aug. 18.
